I installed the whole bundle, and at the end got the message
"Running make install
make test had returned bad status, won't install without force

platform is fedora 11, X86_64.

Is it possible to start over?

It'd help a lot if you told us more about what failed.

Sure. Same commands.

I understand that I haven't given much to go on. I reran
# perl -MCPAN -e'install Jifty'
and here's part of what I captured:

Going to read /root/.cpan/build/
............................................................................DONE
Found 178 old builds, restored the state of 172
Running install for module 'Jifty'
Running make for A/AL/ALEXMV/Jifty-0.90701.tar.gz

Has already been made
Running make test

t/00-load.t ............................................
Dubious, test returned 2 (wstat 512, 0x200)

( many repeated lines of "Dubious" )

followed by

and more, ending with

result: FAIL
ALEXMV/Jifty-0.90701.tar.gz
/usr/bin/make test -- NOT OK
//hint// to see the cpan-testers results for installing this module, try:

Running make install
make test had returned bad status, won't install without force
prerequisite module[Apache2::Const] not known
CPAN: Time::HiRes loaded ok (v1.9719)

I suppose I'm being perhaps too simple minded here - I think I would
like to use Jifty, but if the install procedure fails....

Thanks for listening

Don, this almost certainly means that some of the modules Jifty depends
on didn't install cleanly. To triage something like that, we really need
the logs from the beginning to the first error.

Jesse, I hesitated to put all of that into an email. But I attach here
the file containing the log of my last attempt (with real appreciation
for your willingness to help)

Don,

This didn't go back "far enough" can you please clear the content of
~/.cpan/build/ and run again? That should show you Jifty's dependencies
being installed. And more than likely one of those fails first which is
causing a cascading failure.

Jesse,
I append the contents of ~/.cpan/build. Unfortunately I am not well
enough versed to identify where the first failure occurs; the terminal
output is so massive that I can't get back to the very beginning to see
if there is an early hint there.

I executed two cycles of clearing the build directory, and running the
install. In each case I took all of the defaults identified by CPAN. In
both cases, of course, the results were the same.

Could you inspect the data and hopefully suggest another step in fault
isolation?

Jesse,
I append the contents of ~/.cpan/build. Unfortunately I am not well
enough versed to identify where the first failure occurs; the terminal
output is so massive that I can't get back to the very beginning to see
if there is an early hint there.
There's a tool called "script" which will help catpure that. What's in
your build directory doesn't do a whole lot of good. The massive output
is what we need. pastebin.com may be a reasonable place to upload the
output of 'script'

I executed two cycles of clearing the build directory, and running the
install. In each case I took all of the defaults identified by CPAN. In
both cases, of course, the results were the same.
Could you inspect the data and hopefully suggest another step in fault
isolation?

Jesse,

http://pastebin.com/m1da14be8 contains (I hope) the terminal output
captured by script.

Visible to my eyes in scanning the output, the first hint of failure is
at Email::MIME::CreateHTML, and the next at the make test on
ALEXMV/Jifty-0.09701.tar.gz.

(Thanks for the new knowledge about script and pastebin. Elderly dogs
like me still enjoy learning new tricks!!)

Ah good, the Email::MIME::CreateHTML failure is actually spurious. It's
a documentation issue which won't affect the module's operation.

Try running:

cpan -fi Email::MIME::CreateHTML

Try a manual installation:

perl -MCPAN -eshell
notest install Email::MIME::CreateHTML and then try Jifty again.

We're also tracking a regression due to a new version of CGI.pm. But
let's see if this gets you closer?

notest install Email::MIME::CreateHTML
Jesse,
cpan shell -- CPAN exploration and modules installation (v1.9205)
ReadLine support available (maybe install Bundle::CPAN or Bundle::CPANxxl?)

cpan[1]> notest install Email::MIME::CreateHTML
CPAN: Storable loaded ok (v2.18)
Going to read /root/.cpan/Metadata
Database was generated on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 19:27:03 GMT
CPAN: YAML loaded ok (v0.68)
Going to read /root/.cpan/build/
............................................................................DONE
Found 2 old builds, restored the state of 2
Running install for module 'Email::MIME::CreateHTML'
Running make for B/BB/BBC/Email-MIME-CreateHTML-1.026.tar.gz
Has already been unwrapped into directory
/root/.cpan/build/Email-MIME-CreateHTML-1.026-GUVJCh
Has already been made
Skipping test because of notest pragma
Running make install
make test had returned bad status, won't install without force

Should I force? If so, ow do I do that?

My thanks to Jesse and Shawn for steering me to a successful install of
Jifty.

[***@localhost ~]$ jifty
action - add an action class to your jifty application
adopt - localize a stock jifty component
app - create the skeleton of a jifty application
env - access the jifty environment
fastcgi - a fastcgi server for your jifty application
help - show help
modperl2 - a modperl2 handler for your jifty app.
model - add a model class to your jifty application
plugin - create the skeleton of a jifty plugin
po - extract translatable strings from your application
schema - create sql to update or create your jifty app's tables
script - add a new jifty script to your jifty application
server - a standalone webserver for your jifty application

Now that I have a functioning system (with good documentation) I think I
can climb at least partway up the hill alone. (I hope so, anyway.)

I did notice some warning flags raised after forcing the install of
Email::MIME::CreateHTML, which FWIW I have included below.

Thanks again,
Don

None of these look like anything that you should worry about.
